This past weekend I went to a beginner's yoga class. I don't think I've ever been to a beginner yoga class, even when I was BEGINNING yoga. I jumped right into a power yoga class that my friend took - and was immediately hooked. This weekend, though, due to a scheduling conflict with my son's Tae Kwon Do, I took my first beginner's class. It was a packed class, and what I noticed first and foremost was the average age of the people in the class. I would say that the average age was 55, with a few well into their sixties and even 70's. They were an inspiration! The class was, of course, much slower than a power yoga class - but that is why I liked it. In a power yoga class, we can sometimes fall into the trap to go faster, harder, stronger, push, push, push! I do love to challenge myself in these classes, and at home. However, it was so good to be in a class that goes slower. It really gave me a chance to hold those stretches longer, and listen to my body, and take the time to make the minor adjustments that you don't always get the time to do in Power yoga. When packing up our mats at the end of the class, a woman walks up to me and announces knowingly, "You normally take the Power yoga class, I can tell. ". I replied, "Yes, I do. But I think it's really good to take some different classes", because it will always wake you up to something new. And you always take something away with you from every class. So, take a different yoga class one day, one that you wouldn't expect to try, and see where it takes you. You might surprise yourself.
